The mission of HELPS International is to provide enduring programs of practical, social and spiritual value to the people in the developing world through a system of partnership and mutual responsibility.
Public elementary schools in rural Guatemala do not often give students the skills needed to progress to high school or college. Additionally, parents often feel disconnected from schools and are unable to provide feedback or have a say in the quality of their child’s education.
HELPS International runs a private school in Santa Avelina, Quiché. Today, local teachers, students, and a committee of parents are defining the educational process for their children from kindergarten to 6th grade. This collaborative model has dramatically improved the quality of education in the area.
This program is demonstrating long-term, positive outcomes for all children involved. Over 300 children have graduated from the school and continued to Colegios de Secundaria for secondary education. A Parent-Teachers Association has been organized for the first time in the region. This has fostered consistent parental involvement, a new concept for schools in the Highlands of this area. Successful monthly tuition contributions from 100% of families.
